The Folk culture i.e. art, dances, drama etc. not only provide wholesome entertainment to the provided parties, but is is reflection of the social standard. Its originality  and usefulness. It is believed that folk dances have their origin in the harvest festivals and the rituals of the earliest time, when Gods were invoked through music and dance.
The hill folk long traditional of preserving their dance forms and rich cultural traditions. The traditional folk dance is performed at all community functions or gathering- a marriage, child-birth or the worshipping of a God.
Here is a district wise list of folk dances of Himachal Pradesh: 


Folk Dances/Traditional Dances of Kullu District

1. Naati or Nati: Naati  or Nati is the popular dance of the Kullu, Sirmour, Mandi, Shimla and Chamba districts of Himachal Pradesh and is performed well by the people of all age groups. The dancers are attire in the full splendor of their traditional costumes and ornaments. They make a crescent form by linking hands crossed on the back of each other. The accompanying musical instruments generally consists of dhols(barren shaped drums), nagaras (bowl shaped drums), karnals (long trumpet) and shehnai. The dancers move in steps to varying rythemes and slowly gain in momentum with the rising crescendo of the accompanying music. Both men and women participate in the dance. The dance from differs from region to region and is identified and named with a particular region. The popular forms of Naati are Gaddi Naati, Kullu Naati, Kinnauri Naati, Sirmouri Naati and Shimla Naati.

2. Karthi Folk Dance: Karthi is a post-harvest dance performed in the open, in the light of an autumn moon. In it both men and women find an occasion for relaxation and rejoining after the autumnal harvest. Dressed in gray clothes they assemble in an open field to dance and sing. Knotting their arms, the dancers form a circle and begin their movements slowly and gracefully. Soon when the tempo rises and the dance reaches its climax, the women dancers provoke their male partners further to dance more energetically.

3. Dharvedi and Droondu Folk Dance: Dharvedi and Droondu dance is also a popular dance of Kullu district. Dharvedi and Droondu are religious dances arranged during Jagaras or Shant. In these, scenes from the battlefields or temple and stupa shapes are presented. Dancing in circles and suddenly lying down on the ground and striking. Various poses are some of the chief features of these dances. These are danced with great fervor. These dances can be seen during the Dusshera season in Kullu.

4. Kharait, Ujagjama and Chadhgebrikar Folk Dance:  Kharait, Ujagjama and Chadhgebrikar are material dances of men. These are danced with swords and heralds, sometimes in a circle in a fast tempo.


5. Dhilli Pheti and Bashari Folk Dance: Dhilli Pheti and Bashari are dances performed in village melas(fair), are pure joyous events where both men and women participate.
